The medical program in the Philippines is divided into three broad phases: 1.5-2 years of Bachelor of Science (BS), 4 years of Doctor of Medicine (MD), and a 12-month internship.
Since 2021, India’s National Medical Commission (NMC) has defined the minimum duration of an overseas medical course as 54 months under FMGL regulations. Earlier, the MD program in the Philippines was only 48 months. However, as per the official communication from the CHED International Affairs Staff in July 2025, higher education institutions in the Philippines are structured as a 54-month MD program now, excluding the BS (pre-medical course), but making the 12-month internship mandatory.
The announcement from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in the Philippines clarified that the graduates of the MD program (whether Filipino or foreign students) may work in limited or restricted practice after graduation and licensure from a CHED-recognised university and completing the 12-month clinical internship.
