Dhaka National Medical College Overview

The Dhaka National Medical College took over from the Dhaka National Medical Institute, which was founded in 1925 as part of the Non-Cooperation Movement of the Indian Subcontinent against British colonial rule. This movement was led by Mahatma Gandhi, Maulana Muhammad Ali, and Maulana Sawkat Ali. Along with other programs, the Non-Cooperation movement asked the people of the subcontinent to stop going to schools run by the British government and instead set up their own National Schools, Colleges, and Institutes to teach modern science. So, in the Bengal Province, two medical schools were set up to train national doctors in modern medicine. The Calcutta National Medical Institute was one of these schools, and the Dhaka National Medical Institute was the other. Currently, an 11-story structure with 14000 square feet of floor area on each level is under construction. Total floor area is 154000 square feet, including central air conditioning and 24-hour lift service. The Dhaka National Medical Institute Hospital has 850 beds and an emergency service that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The hospital is close to the building where people go to school. There are administrative sections, 8 departments, a library, 5 lecture galleries, a huge examination hall, one conference room, one seminar room, one teacher's lounge, and male and female students' common rooms in the college building. Academic Faculty at the College and Hospital currently numbers 179 full-time members, a mix of prominent academics with demonstrated teaching and research expertise and younger professionals with diverse experience. The college's mission is to create competent, devoted, compassionate, and responsible doctors who will be able to lead the health care sector as leaders in order to meet the community's rising demand.
