Intake for Study in Italy

Intakes

Colleges and Universities in Italy provide a total of two intakes every year, international students can apply for either of these. The first intake happens in September to January and the second intake begins in February till July.

Higher education in Italy is mainly offered by a large and international network of public as well as state affiliated universities. Universities run by states of Italy are under the Ministry of Education, Italy. There are also a large number of private universities and post secondary educational centres run by states that provide vocational education.

  • Undergraduate Degree: Laurea: The Laurea, which is equivalent to a Bachelor of Science in the European university system, is an undergraduate degree obtained after a 3 years programme of study. A few programs are there that need 4 years of study, but most of the programs of study are of 3 years.  
  • Graduate Degree: Laurea Magistrale: The duration of study depends on the course taken, with medicine or paramedical science taking at least six years and law five years. Aside from these exceptions, the typical duration of a bachelor degree in Italy is three or four years. The Laurea Magistrale degree, which is equivalent to a Master of Science in the European university system, is obtained after two years of graduate studies and aims to provide rigorous, advanced training in specific sectors.
  • Postgraduate Degree (PhD): Dottorato di Ricerca: The duration of study depends on the course taken. The PhD degree is the highest level of university education and requires that candidates pass a comprehensive examination and complete original research leading to a dissertation. The program lasts at least 3 years.One can get an extension for more years to complete and submit the thesis work, after that the candidates are awarded PhD. 
  • Specialising Masters and Continuing Education Programs: For specialised masters and continuing programs the duration of study also depends on the course taken. Some universities also offer a specialisation or postgraduate degree course aimed at increasing students’ professional education, which is often called 1st and 2nd level university Master’s Degrees.Continuing education system is also same as specialised master courses, but the eligibility criteria is different.

Hundreds of scholarships are available at Italian Universities for international students for the academic year 2022 to 2023. Most of the scholarships provide an average monthly stipend of 2352 Euro along with health insurance, travel allowance, tuition fees and accommodation. With a fully or partially funded scholarship, you can fulfill your dream of studying at the world’s top universities in Italy.

1.     Scuola Normale Superiore PhD Scholarships - 75 PhD scholarships are offered by the Scuola Normale Superiore to both students from outside Italy and Italian citizens for the duration of four years. This scholarship covers tuition fees and a grant for board and accommodation.

2.     Arturo Falaschi Postdoctoral Fellowships - Is a fully funded scholarship for international students. The fellowship period is 2 years with the possibility of a 1-year extension. It provides stipend, health insurance and additional benefits.

3.     Bocconi University Scholarships - It is a fully funded scholarship for international students. These scholarships are available for undergraduate and master’s studies. The scholarships are worth up to approximately €12,000 per year (for Undergraduate) and  € 13,000 per year.

4.     University of Bologna Scholarship - It is a fully funded scholarship for international students. This scholarship is offered for undergraduate and master’s studies. This scholarship provides the recipient with study grants of €11,000 gross. 

5.     Italian Government Scholarship - It is a fully funded scholarship for international students to pursue master's or Ph.D. This scholarship covers monthly payments of 900 EUROS.

6.     NATO Defense College Fellowships - It is a fully funded research scholarship for international students. This fellowship will provide a stipend to cover the costs of his/her stay in Rome and his/her travel expenses.

7.     Gran Sasso Science Institute Scholarship for Ph.D. - It offers 32 Ph.D. fellowships to international students. This scholarship will provide tuition fee waiver, accommodation and free meal vouchers.
