Oxford University Medical School

The Medical Sciences Division includes the Oxford University Medical School, and education is done in its different constituent departments. It follows traditional teaching methods and thus divides the course into Pre-Clinical and clinical phases, with Pre-Clinical students (years 1-3) based in the University Science Area in Oxford City Centre and clinical students (years 4-6) based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington, Oxford.

The medical school admits 150 students per year to its 6-year BM/BCh course, which is traditionally structured into two halves: a three-year pre-clinical component with little patient contact and a high focus on scientific principles of medical practice, which ends with the award of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Medical Sciences, and a three-year clinical component with a high level of patient exposure, which ends with the award of the BM/BCh (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery).

Students will receive a thorough understanding of their selected alternatives, as well as advanced technical abilities at the laboratory bench as well as scientific data handling and presentation. The Radcliffe Science Library (for Pre-Clinical students) and the Bodleian Health Care Libraries (the Cairns Library at John Radcliffe and the Knowledge Centre at Churchill Hospital) are the two primary libraries linked with the Medical School. Prior to its closing in 2007, the Radcliffe Infirmary also served as a teaching facility. Oxford University has produced 16 Nobel laureates in medicine, including Sir Charles Sherrington, Sir Peter Medawar, and Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe. Along with lectures and seminars, tutorials are an important aspect of the curriculum at Oxford Medical School. Students meet with their tutors and are taught in small groups once a week. Their education is adapted to their own interests.

Outside of the university, Oxford is a busy city with lots to do. Overall, medicine at Oxford allows students to flourish not only in their academics but also in extracurricular activities through a diverse range of organizations. The final year focuses on solidifying care and management abilities and preparing students for admittance into foundation training. Following general clinical studies, students can pursue an elective in the UK or abroad, as well as a final student assistantship.
