Education Types

Canada's constitution allows each province and territory to deliver its education programs. Despite regional differences, Canada's colleges, universities, and polytechnics use similar terms to describe common pathways and credentials. Postsecondary institutions issue degrees, diplomas and certificates, depending on the nature of the institutions and the length of the programs. The types of education in Canada are as follows:

  • Certificate and Diploma Program (Duration 1 – 2 years) A wide variety of certificate and diploma programs are offered by the Universities of Canada. These are vocational and job oriented programs, mainly technical.
  • Associate degree programs (Duration 2 years) Associate degree programs are very popular in Canadian universities. Mostly these programs are quivalent to the first two years of a 4 year bachelor’s degree.
  • Bachelor’s degree (Duration 3 – 5 years) It is an undergraduate degree program which requires successful completion of secondary school. The duration of your course depends on the province and type of program although most courses last for 4 years. Certain provinces like Quebec have bachelor’s degrees of 5 years.
  • Bachelor’s Honours degree program (Duration 4 years) It is an undergraduate degree program which requires successful completion of secondary school. This will require getting a specific GPA or credits, a major of a special program.
  • Post graduate diploma program (Duration 1 – 2 years) Most universities in Canada offer PG diploma programs in a wide variety of programs, including humanities, commerce and science. A post bachelor degree qualification is required to take admission in this program.
  • Master’s degree (by thesis) (Duration 1 – 2 years) Master degree program often referred to as research masters. This requires mandatory submission of the thesis work for the assessment and course completion.
  • Master’s degree (by non-thesis) (Duration 1 – 2 years) Most Canadian Universities offer non-thesis master degree programs in a wide variety of subjects.This is a taught master’s degree, not requiring thesis submission.
  • Doctorate or PhD program (Duration 4 – 7 years) Ph.D. is awarded when students complete a dissertation and successfully defend their work before a panel of faculty members.
  • Post doctoral programs (Duration No time limit) Post doctoral programs are specialised research-oriented programs offered to specialised candidates who have obtained higher marks and achieve in their academics.

  • Certificate/Diploma Programmes - 60% expected in 12th grade, TOEFL – PBT – 550 minimum CBT – 21 minimum, IELTS score required 6.5 scores and a minimum of 6 per section.

  • Bachelor’s level Programmes - 70% marks in 12th-grade exam, 12th-grade level Mathematics for Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering courses, TOEFL – PBT – 550 minimum CBT – 21 minimum, IELTS score 6.5 and a minimum of 6 per section, SOP and LOR

  • Master’s Programmes - Up to 3 years of full-time work experience, GMAT: 580 - 600 minimum., IELTS 6.5, CBT – 237 – 250 minimum, TOEFL – PBT – 580-600 minimum, 4 years of bachelor’s degree, 70% average, SOP and LOR

  • MBA/PGDM Program - Bachelor’s in any discipline from a recognized institution, Work experience of 3-5 years in any related field, Minimum of 1 year of work experience, GMAT score of  500 - 700 out of 800.

  • Doctoral Level Programs - CV/Resume, Accredited master's degree in a related field with strong grades and proven research ability and potential,Transcripts for university degree, GMAT or GRE scores, SOP and LOR
