There are 3 major intakes in Canada for international students. These three intakes are Fall/September intake, Winter/January intake and Summer/May intake. The most popular intake to study in Canada for Indian students is the Fall/September intake. Type of Education in Canada

Education Types

The provincial and territorial governments in Canada look after their post-secondary education. There are three types of education system in Canada. They are: primary, secondary and post-secondary. Colleges, and universities fall in post-secondary education; offers certificates, diploma, advance diploma, UG, PG and PhD programs. 

  • Certificate Programme: The certificate program duration is 1 year. This program offers entry-level skills and contemporary knowledge on the student’s chosen vocation. 
  • Diploma Programme: The duration of a diploma program is 2 years (can be extended). This program offers entry-level skills and contemporary knowledge on a specific trade.
  • Associate Degree: The duration of the associate degree program is 2 years. This degree program is considered a kind of FOUNDATION degree programme that focuses on a traditional area, like pure science, arts, commerce, etc.
  • Applied Degree: The duration of an applied degree is 4 years. It combines the academic focus of a UG program with hands-on skills and experience. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree Programme: Canadian universities offer 4-year bachelor's degree programmes. It takes four years to complete, but the exception is institutions in Quebec, where the programme is 3 years. 
  • Post-Graduate Certificate & Diploma: Cert. and Dip. Programmes are used to supplement students’ UG degree by entitling further specialisation in a particular area. 
  • Master’s Degree Programme: A master’s or PG degree in Canada is akin to other countries' degree programmes. It helps students get advanced knowledge and skills that they have studied in their bachelor’s programmes. 
  • PhD Program: PhD duration is 3-5 years, including thesis presentation. Students spend 2 to 3 years on their academic work and the remaining 2 years on preparing their thesis work. The thesis must be original and contribute to his/her chosen domain.


Eligibility: Academic Prerequisites

Eligibility

There are no minimum age criteria to study in Canada. But individuals who are 18 years or older are eligible to apply for an individual study permit. You must have the required academic qualifications to pursue a UG, PG or PhD program in Canada. You need a sound academic background with proof of English language proficiency (IELTS or TOEFL). Also, you must demonstrate your financial support.

The minimum IELTS or TOEFL scores vary by the Canadian Universities and the courses you choose. For that matter, you need to check the specific requirement. Most universities require SOP, LOR and a medical certificate as a part of your eligibility to study in Canada.
