University of Tasmania

Overview

The University of Tasmania was founded on January 1, 1890, in Australia, after the termination of international scholarships. It immediately succeeded the Tasmanian Council for Education. The university is Australia's fourth-oldest institution. Christ College, one of the university's residential colleges, was founded in 1846 after being recommended in Lieutenant-Governor Sir John Franklin's Legislative Council in 1840. It is the country's oldest tertiary institution. The sandstone university is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning. The University of Tasmania is one of Australia's leading public institutions, located in Hobart.

The University of Tasmania has three major campuses in Tasmania, located in Hobart, Launceston, and Burnie. Hobart epitomises a city on the edge of unspoiled nature. Sandy Bay is located five minutes south of the city centre. In addition to purpose-built teaching and learning facilities, this campus includes a number of on-site services and resources, many of which are situated in the Tasmanian University Student Association (TUSA) building on Churchill Avenue. The University of Tasmania also maintains a number of modest, specialised facilities within the College of Health and Medicine at its Sydney campuses in Darlinghurst and Rozelle. It also maintains a cooperative research laboratory in Pyrmont, Sydney, at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

The University of Tasmania contains five colleges (formerly known as faculties), which are the College of Arts, Law, and Education, the College of Health and Medicine, the College of Science and Engineering, the Tasmanian School of Business, and the University College.
