Netherlands Education Types

If you want to study in the Netherlands, you need to understand the education types first. Higher education in the Netherlands is categorised into 2 main segments. One is Research University, i.e., WO and Universities of Applied Sciences, i.e. HBO. Both Universities offer UG and PG programmes in various fields, but doctoral programmes (PhDs) are primarily offered at research Universities.

Eligibility: Academic Prerequisites

To study in the Netherlands, you must show that you are eligible to study a bachelor’s or master’s programme in a college or University. Though specific requirements may vary by the university and course you choose, it is important to check the eligibility or academic prerequisites before you choose a University. Here are the basic requirements to have:

  • You need a recognised senior secondary certificate to study a bachelor’s programme, IB or British A-level qualification.

The cost to study in the Netherlands depends on the city you live in and the University you choose to pursue your course. The average cost can be between euro 15,000 and 20,000 per year, or euro 800 to 12,000 per month. This scholarship is offered to non-European students who pursue English-taught UG or PG programmes at any University in the Netherlands.  The scholarship covers tuition fees and living expenses. The selection criteria are highly competitive because this financial assistance is offered only to candidates with strong academic backgrounds.

Leiden University Excellence Scholarship

This is one of the top scholarships targeting excellent non-European students pursuing a full-time master’s program at Leiden University. The scholarship or financial support offers full or partial tuition fee coverage. It offers financial support that is based on one’s academic performance as well as the potential to contribute to the international classroom.

Visa Process

You must have a valid student visa if you want to move to the Netherlands for higher studies. There are 2 main types of student visas offered by the Netherlands government. One is a Schengen Visa, which is for short-term studies, where you stay in the Netherlands for less than 90 days. The other is an MVV or provisional residence permit, as well as a Residence Permit or VVR, which is applicable for longer-term studies, more than 90 days.
