  • First Cycle (Undergraduate) degree program:  This is a bachelor's level education, which comes under the first cycle of the higher education system in Malta. A UG degree course lasts for 3 years in all Universities in Malta. 
  • Second Cycle (Postgraduate): This is a master’s level education, which comes under the 2nd cycle of education in Malta. It is a PG programme that typically requires 2 years to complete. A one-year accelerated master’s programme is also offered by some Universities. 
  • Third Cycle (Doctoral): In Malta’s education system, the 3rd cycle is called doctoral level or PhD education. A 1st-class master's degree holder is eligible to apply for a research-based PhD programme in their respective discipline. The programme usually takes 3 years with rigorous academic and hands-on learning, teaching responsibility, and submitting a thesis. It can be extended up to 6 years.

To study in Malta, as an international student, you generally need to have completed your 10+2 or Senior Secondary certificate to pursue a UG programme and a bachelor’s level programme to pursue a PG programme. Experience in the respective field is desirable but not always mandatory. You can study in Malta without IELTS, because there are universities that accept an MOI letter as proof of proficiency in English rather than IELTS.   • You need a senior secondary certificate or 12 years of schooling to study a bachelor’s programme in any University in Malta. 
  • To study a postgraduate-level programme, you need a 1st-class bachelor’s degree in the relevant subject. Additionally, IELTS or TOEFL is generally required for postgraduate studies. 
  • An IELTS minimum score of 6.0 is required by universities in Malta for studying in the country, and is necessary for the relevant programmes.

It offers a full tuition waiver and supports research excellence as well as innovation. The amount of scholarship can be up to €13,000 annually.
  • Malta Arts Scholarships: A prestigious award conferred to Maltese and international students pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s in fields like visual arts, design, and architecture. The amount of the scholarship is €20,000, but it depends on the programme level and tuition fees.
  • Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's Scholarships: Erasmus is a prestigious scholarship programme offered by different universities in Europe. It covers full university tuition fees, the cost of travel and accommodation. The amount can go up to €49,000 for two-year master’s programmes.
  • European Institute of Education Scholarships: The EIE institute in Malta offers this scholarship to domestic and international students. The amount can be between €5,000 and €7,000, which covers full or partial tuition fees.
  • Nehru Study Abroad Scholarship: One of the most trusted awards for Indian students pursuing UG and PG courses abroad. This is not only a Malta-specific scholarship, but also for all countries where students with an excellent background pursue bachelor's or master’s programmes abroad. The amount can go up to €27,000 for the full programme.
