The Ministry of Public Education issued a directive on September 26, 1876, establishing the ninth Teacher’s Training Institute in Russia in the district town of Belgorod. Over the years, the institution has evolved significantly. By a decree of the People’s Commissariat for Education of the RSFSR, it was reorganized as the Belgorod Pedagogical Institute on June 4, 1919. In 1920, it became the Belgorod Institute of Public Education. The institute later moved to Belgorod in 1957 and was housed on Kommunisticheskaya Street, now known as the Social-Theological Faculty building at 78 Preobrazhenskaya Street.
