Founded in 1851, the University of Derby is a public higher education and research institution in England. It was originally established as a teacher training college, called Diocesan Derby Academy. Over the years, a number of institutions have contributed to the formation of the university. The institution was granted university status in 1992.
The university's main campus, based in Derby, consists of most of the administrative offices and academic buildings. It includes a multi-faith centre, conference rooms, lecture halls, recording studios, concert halls, arts and cultural venues, computer labs, outdoor courts, and sports facilities. The Student Union is home to some of the university's student clubs and organisations. The university has a number of residence halls that provide student accommodations in en suite rooms, studios, and standard rooms. These halls are within walking distance of the city's campuses and entertainment hubs.
It operates a bus service between campuses to facilitate student and faculty mobility. The academic structure of the university is divided into five colleges, which are further subdivided into different schools. The university offers more than 300 programmes in the fields of arts, business, humanities, science, education, social sciences, engineering, law, management, health, public care, tourism and hospitality, nursing, and natural sciences. In addition, the institution offers around 100 online courses and short courses to facilitate flexible learning for working professionals.
It has partnerships with a number of overseas degree institutions, including the University of Derby. The Swiss Education Group, Botswana College of Accountancy, Raffles Design Institute, Royal Malaysian Police, and Mediterranean College are the university's international partners.
