Jane and Leland Stanford established Stanford University in 1885 in remembrance of their only child, who died of typhoid. Stanford University finally opened its doors in 1891, with 555 students enrolling in the inaugural year. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission has accredited Stanford (WSCUC). In addition, the institution is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), Conceive Design Implement Operate (CDIO), and Space-grant. The university is a shining example of ethnic variety, with students from all areas of life: 25% are Asian, 8% are Black or African American, 18% are Hispanic or Latino, 12% are international, 9% are mixed race, and 23% are White.
