Overview

Overview

Hanoi Medical University is the oldest university in Vietnam, located in Hanoi. HMU was founded by the French in 1902, during the French colonial period, under the name Indochina Medical College. The HMU's first director was Alexandre Yersin, who co-discovered the bacterium that causes bubonic plague and renamed it Yersinia pestis in his honor.

HMU, formerly known as Indochina Medical University, was founded in 1902. It was Vietnam's first modern university and second only to the Temple of Literature among all Vietnamese universities. In 1961 Hanoi Pharmaceutical University separated from his HMU and settled on the old campus. The site was also shared with the Faculty of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

HMU has moved to a newly constructed campus at its current address on Thong Tat Tung Road. It is named after one of its directors and is adjacent to Hanoi's largest hospital, Bach Mai Hospital. We also have an office in Viet Duc Hospital. The list of affiliated educational institutions includes the National Pediatric Hospital, National Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, E Hospital, National Cancer Hospital, National Institute of Hematology & Transfusion, National Tropical Disease Hospital, National Dermatology and Venereal Hospital, and Duc Giang Hospital. The hospital and its own clinic, Hanoi Medical University Hospital.

HMU is considered the most prestigious medical university in Vietnam and is known for its highly competitive entrance exams. For a long time, the university was the only one that did not use positive action (also known as "regional preference") in the National Center Test for University Admissions. Positive Action is a system that gives additional points to students in underprivileged areas, such as rural areas.
