Hanoi Medical University is the oldest university in Vietnam, located in Hanoi. HMU was founded by the French in 1902, during the French colonial period, under the name Indochina Medical College. The HMU's first director was Alexandre Yersin, who co-discovered the bacterium that causes bubonic plague and renamed it Yersinia pestis in his honor.

HMU, formerly known as Indochina Medical University, was founded in 1902. It was Vietnam's first modern university and second only to the Temple of Literature among all Vietnamese universities.
