East European University was founded in 2012 as a private higher education institution, quickly gaining a reputation for its academic excellence, particularly in the field of medical education. It is an accredited institution authorised by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Georgia. Today, it has a separate medical school and offers about 21 educational programmes for undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees. While the university does not publish an official student population, it is among the most prominent private universities in Georgia, with a large international cohort from over 15 countries who are pursuing their MBBS in Georgia.
East European University offers a one-cycle MD programme (equivalent to an MBBS) under its Faculty of Healthcare Sciences. The faculty has a nursing education programme, and both of these programmes enrol many international students from different countries who want to study MBBS abroad, with India is at the forefront. The one-cycle medical programme spans 6 years, and is taught entirely in English to all international students; however, learning basic Georgian will ensure clear communication with the local patients during the clinical years.
The clinical training at East European University emphasises evidence-based practice and learning to use the latest medical technology. The university maintains partnerships and associations with leading hospitals and international medical organisations to provide clinical training. Additionally, it features two campuses in Tbilisi, with the main campus located near the US Embassy. The main campus features highly advanced laboratories, simulation centres, and a large library with over 9500 books and global scientific journals.
