Overview

Hull York Medical School (HYMS) is an English medical school that began accepting students in 2003. Along with Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Peninsula Medical School, and the University of East Anglia Medical School, it was established as part of the British Government's efforts to teach additional doctors. The medical school has 156 spots available for 2018 and receives over 1,200 applicants each year. The medical school has 156 spots for 2018 and receives approximately 1,200 applications each year. Each year, for the first two years of their education, fifty percent of the students whose applications are accepted go to the University of Hull, and the other fifty percent go to the University of York.

Students spend the first two years of their studies at their academic base (Hull or York). The second phase will consist of traveling to various locations such as York, Hull, Scunthorpe, Grimsby, and Scarborough, as well as Northallerton and Middlesbrough. Students in the last year of the study (phase three) effectively take on the position of a "junior" pre-registration house officer and are also eligible to participate in an "elective" term overseas. This is a typical part of the medical curriculum in the United Kingdom. The first overseas students arrived at the institution in September 2006. The course at Hull York Medical School employs problem-based learning. Early and persistent clinical experience in general practices, hospitals, and community settings is valued.

Students at medical school can pursue a BSc or master's degree in disciplines such as anatomy, biology, and ethics. If you accept our offer of admission, you can choose between studying at the University of Hull or the University of York for the first two years of your degree. A random ballot is used to assign campuses to students. Both campuses provide a vibrant student experience as well as a welcoming environment in which to study and live. Academics, clinicians, and tutors will teach you the same curriculum and provide you with the same level of competence and abilities.

Your learning continues at our hospital sites in Years 3, 4, and 5, as you will be doing extended clinical assignments. You will rotate through our clinical sites in Hull, York, Scarborough, Northallerton, Middlesbrough, Scunthorpe, and Grimsby. Students in Years 3 to 5 are currently expected to live in their home campus city (Hull or York) throughout the curriculum but are given NHS housing for any placement away from their home campus.
