Kent State University was established in 1910 as a teacher training institution. The first full academic year began in 1913, with 144 students enrolled at the Kent site. After multiple name changes, the Ohio General Assembly allowed the inclusion of liberal arts colleges and the granting of degrees in arts and sciences at Kent State, and eventually, Kent State Normal College became Kent State College in 1929. Kent State University was established in 1935. It is a research university that is open to the public. The complex sprawls over 866 acres of suburban property. Kent State University also has seven regional offices in Ashtabula, Burton, Jackson Township, East Liverpool, Salem, Warren, and New Philadelphia.
