Type of Education in France

Education Types

In France, higher education is very flexible. Each institution has liberty to set its own admission criteria and make its own curriculum, admission and take decisions based on each applicant's background as well as the demands of the programmes. Education is organised by the authorities in accordance with the LMD system, i.e. Licence, Master and Doctorate.

  • Licence Program (L1, L2 and L3): There are three types of university degrees in France. Licence programs are very popular in the French education system. These are undergraduate degrees awarded after a period of 6 semesters i.e. 3 years of study.
  • Masters Program (M1 and M2): These are graduate degrees awarded after a period of study lasting 2 years, i.e. a total of 5 years study. All masters programs are defined according to the field of study, specialisation and path.
  • Masters Program (M1): This research master’s program enables students to progress to a doctorate level program. One needs to study step by step to go to the higher level. The program is defined in accordance with the field of study, specialisation and path.
  • Masters Program (M2): This master’s program enables students to prepare for the world of work. It is often called a vocational master’s program. One needs to study step by step to go to the higher level. The program is defined in accordance with the field of study, specialisation and path.
  • Engineering Program (diplôme d’ingénieur): Engineering programs are normally national level programs in France. The National Institute for Engineering, France provides authorities to provide engineering colleges and universities to conduct programs and offer degrees with accreditation.
  • Doctorate Program: Like most doctorate level programs require thesis work, and in French Universities this is also the same. You must therefore be able to find a thesis topic and a thesis supervisor before you can enrol. A doctorate or Phd is awarded after a period of study lasting 16 semesters, i.e. 3 years, or a total of 8 years study.
