The University of Bristol was established in 1876 as University College, Bristol, and was renamed the University of Bristol in 1909. It was widely recognized as the first higher education institution in the United Kingdom to accept men and women on an equal footing. Bristol University, like other English universities, evolved from older institutions such as University College, Bristol (founded in 1876), Bristol Medical School (1833), and the Merchant Ventures Technical College, which was founded in 1595 as a school and later became the university engineering faculty.
The institution accepts only the brightest candidates and has a worldwide reputation for providing its alumni with the greatest job placement opportunities.
