In 1979, Hanoi Medical University officially established its second campus at Hai Phong University after years of sending medical students there for training. In 1985, the second campus was developed as a branch of Haiphong Medical University under Hanoi Medical University.
In 1999, according to the Prime Minister's Decision No. 06/1999/QĐ-TTg, Hai Phong Medical University was established on the basis of the Hai Phong Medical University branch campus. On November 11, 2013, the Prime Minister signed Resolution No. 2153/QD-TTg to rename Hai Phong Medical University to Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy under the supervision of the Ministry of Health.
The mission of the university is to develop as a medical and pharmaceutical research and training center, to transfer eminent technologies domestically and internationally, and to provide quality medical personnel to meet people's health care and protection needs, especially in the medical field.
It currently has over 700 staff and faculty, including 500 full-time university staff and 200 hospital staff, including seven professors. 28 associate professors. 77 doctoral students, 180 master's graduates, 65 specialists or equivalent physicians, and 285 part-time lecturers at major clinics.
