FMGE stands for Foreign Medical Graduates Examination, a medicine licensing exam in India. It is conducted by the National Board of Examination (NBE). It was introduced in India in March 2002. It is conducted twice a year in June and December. All Indian and OCI-holder students who want to practice medicine in India after qualifying for an MBBS from Abroad. These students must qualify for the FMGE exam. However, soon it is going to be replaced with the NExT examination.

FMGE Exam Eligibility Criteria

The students are required to fulfil the FMGE Exam eligibility criteria to get a license to practice medicine in India. The major requirements are the student’s degree should be valid in India. The validity of the degree will be checked based on NMC guidelines mentioned in the Gazette of India on 18th December 2021. According to these guidelines:

  • The students are required to study MBBS from a recognized university. The university must follow NMC guidelines. The university must be globally accepted.
  • The university should teach all the 19 compulsory subjects mentioned in the guidelines. It is allowed to add more subjects to the curriculum but cannot change or exclude these subjects.
  • The university must use the English language to instruct the students in class.
  • The university must consider NEET Exam marks while allowing the admission of any Indian students.

Other than these guidelines, the nationality of the student is a major FMGE eligibility criterion.

  • The students must have Indian nationality or they must have an overseas Indian citizenship. That means only an OCI cardholder whose primary degree is equivalent to a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery program can attain a medicine license in India.
  • Students are also required to submit eligibility certificates like provisional pass certificates, Primary Medical Qualification degree certificates, etc (if required).

The students are required to assemble the documents required for FMGE Exam before applying for the examination. The essential documents required to apply for the FMGE exam are given below.

  1. First and Foremost, visit the official website of NBE for FMGE Exam Registration.
  2. Click ”New registrations” and precisely read the instructions mentioned over there.
  3. Now, students are required to fill up their general information including name, email, number, etc.
  4. This will lead to generating login credentials through your entered email or SMS.
  5. Now, students are required to log in with their officially provided credentials.
  6. Now, they are required to submit scanned photographs of documents.
  7. Next, you are required to choose your exam centre wisely and pay the fees to complete the process.

The FMGE Admit Card is the major requirement while appearing for the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination on the exam day. The students must download their admit card and carry it to the examination centre for the Examination.

The Admit Card for FMGE Examinations is released on the official website of FMGE India in the admit card section. Students are required to visit the site and download their FMGE Exam admit card and make them print to carry in physical documents while appearing for the FMGE exam in India.

FMGE Exam Results and Pass Percentage

The FMGE Result date is declared by the National Board of Examination. However, students need to stay aware of the marks required to qualify for the FMGE Examination.

The students who pursued MBBS or its equivalent can get the practice license in India after qualifying for the FMGE Exam. It is the only method to get an Indian medical license. It is one of the most challenging exams for medical students.

If we talk about the FMGE Pass percentage, In Dec 2024, 28.86% of students qualified for the FMGE Exam. It is not a competitive exam and does not consist of variable cutoffs like the NEET exam. Its qualifying marks are fixed at 50%. The student has to attain more than 150 marks in the exam out of 300 marks.

Once, the students qualify for the FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduates Examination), they must apply for the NMR Registration.

The NMR (National Medical Register) is the online database portal launched by the National Medical Commission that stores the data of all Indian medical practitioners. It enables the government to store the information of medical practitioners in India. After NMR registration, students are provided with a unique identification number known as NMR ID. It provides the validation and authority to medical practitioners.
