The HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy was founded in 1947 under the name "Faculty of Medicine" at the University of Saigon of the French Indochina colonial government under the guidance of Professor C. Macias. Situated initially at a small structure on Hai Ba Trưng Road in District 3 of Saigon, in the early stages of development. Following the war in Vietnam, in 1976, the University was consolidated by the government. It consisted of a tiny, well-decorated, French-built office space as a lecturing hall and housing units. Teaching practices at different world-class locations, including the Pasteur Institute of Saigon (present-day Institut Pasteur of Vietnam) and Saigon General Hospital. After the establishment of a new campus in 1966, in Hong Bang Street in District 5 of Saigon, which consists of an auditorium hall and laboratory along with a substantial library, the HCMC University of Medicine and Pharmacy continued to carry out the duties to educate generations of doctors, pharmacists, and dentists in Saigon.
