Hanoi Medical University Overview

Located in Hanoi, Hanoi Medical University is a state university under the Ministry of Health of Vietnam. Founded in 1902, the school was the Indochina Medical School and was founded by French colonists as the oldest and maybe most prestigious medical school in Vietnam. Its first director was Alexandre Yersin, a doctor who famously co-discovered the bacteria known as Yersinia pestis responsible for the bubonic plague, and he subsequently got it named after him. As Vietnam’s first modern university, Hanoi Medical University enjoys an iconic status with educational prestige secondary only to the Temple of Literature. In the year 1961, Hanoi Pharmaceutical University established its independence from HMU and relocated to Hanoi Medical University’s former premises. Nowadays, HMU has a modern campus on Thong Tat Tung Road, in the vicinity of Bach Mai Hospital – Vietnam’s biggest hospital and part of the Associated Hospital & Institute of HMU. HMU maintains its links with other first-class hospitals and institutes in Vietnam in order to help its students gain extensive opportunities for their clerkships and internships. The university has one of the most competitive entrance procedures in the nation, and it is famous as a centre of excellent academic studies and research.
