The University of Manchester is a member of the Russell Group, which is made up of the best research-heavy universities in the UK. In 2004, the University of Manchester was formed when the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology joined together. (USMIT). Both organizations have a hundred-year history, and after many years of collaboration, they eventually decided to merge on October 22, 2004
