Kent State University

Kent State University was established in 1910 as a teacher training institution. The first full academic year began in 1913, with 144 students enrolled at the Kent site. After multiple name changes, the Ohio General Assembly allowed the inclusion of liberal arts colleges and the granting of degrees in arts and sciences at Kent State, and eventually, Kent State Normal College became Kent State College in 1929. Kent State University was established in 1935. It is a research university that is open to the public. The complex sprawls over 866 acres of suburban property. Kent State University also has seven regional offices in Ashtabula, Burton, Jackson Township, East Liverpool, Salem, Warren, and New Philadelphia.

Kent State University is home to the Advanced Materials and Liquid Crystal Institute, which performs extensive research and development in fields such as wearable technologies, nanomaterials, fuel cells, and organic semiconductors. Kent State University has also received the renowned Healthy Campus Award, which honours an institute's commitment to student health and well-being.

Students may participate in intramural sports or try out for one of the several Kent State Golden Flashes varsity teams that compete in the NCAA Division I Mid-American Conference.

Steve Harvey (talk show host), Alaina Reed Hall (actress), Devo (musician), Joe Walsh (guitarist), Ted Henry (news anchor), Jeff Phelps (sportcaster), James Harrison (National Football League player), Cedric Brown (former NFL player), Dolph Ziggler (wrestler), and others are Kent State University alumni.
