It is a public research university that was founded in 1946. After uniting with Canberra College, it began the undergraduate degree program in 1960. The institution is divided into four schools: the School of Physical Sciences, the School of Social Science, the School of Pacific Science, and the School of Medical Research. Today, Australian National University is a world leader in research, teaching, and policy work, and its employees and graduates have won more Nobel Prizes than any other Australian university. It is a member of the International Association of Research Universities (IARU), the Group of Eight, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), the UNESCO Chairs, the U7 Alliance, the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), and other international academic organizations. The Australian National University campus has 358 acres of land. It is situated in Canberra, Australia, and is surrounded by hundreds of trees. The university is made up of four learned societies: the Academy of Humanities, the Academy of Science, the Academy of Social Science, and the Academy of Law.
