The main campus is located south of the city centre, next to Victoria Park. The university's predecessor, the University of Leicester, was granted university status in 1957.
So the world has known it as a university since 1957, when it was granted a royal charter and was given the right to award degrees. The university is famous for the invention of DNA fingerprinting and has partially funded the discovery and identification of the DNA of the remains of King Richard III in Leicester. In recent years, the university has disposed of a number of lower-quality facilities to invest in new ones and is currently undertaking a redevelopment worth more than £300 million. The new John Foster residence opened in October 2006. The David Wilson Library, twice the size of the old University Library, opened on April 1, 2008, and a new biomedical research building (the Henry Wellcome Building) was built. A comprehensive renovation of the Percy Gee Student Union building was completed in September 2010, and another project is underway and is expected to be completed in spring 2024.
