The USSR government established the university on February 5th, 1960. The RUDN University was given the name Patrice Lumumba on February 22, 1961, honoring one of the figures who represented the struggle for African freedom. The university was renamed the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia on February 5, 1992, due to a decision by the Russian government.
Along with five other new faculties, the faculty of RUDN University's medical faculty began classes on September 1st, 1961.
